Nikolai was kicking back in his seat, a fat cigar lodged between his finely manicured fingers, wisps of smoke filling the air around him.

“There’s been a change of plan. ” He leveled his eyes. “You’re staying here with my daughter until I say otherwise.”

What the hell, was he serious about that shit? Not happening.

“No fucking way! I’m in charge of…”

“As of this moment, you’re in charge of only one thing – Sasha. I don’t want you to think about anything other than her safety while you’re here. You are to dedicate all your time and energy to keeping my precious daughter out of harm’s way. She is your only assignment until I’ve dealt with the Sherazi situation.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It was as though a swarm of bees had invaded my head, and for a second I thought I might go truly apeshit. Instead, I pressed two fingers against the bridge of my nose and squeezed, hoping to relieve the pressure in my skull and prevent an explosion.

Calm, must stay calm and not break stuff.

Breathing in and out, I felt the weight of my next words, knowing how much hinged on my ability to worm out of this egregious task.

“I’m not going to sit here and fester when we have a major shipment due in less than three months. Do you really want me to languish here and babysit, with the spaghetti-eaters making a play for our turf? We can’t risk it, not now. Not with so much at stake.”

“The only thing I will not risk is my daughter’s life. This is not open to debate, Aleksey. You are staying put.”

Zoya spent years doing volunteering work all across Europe, from cleaning school basements in Northern Russia to excavating Stone Age artifacts in Euskadi (the Basque country) and renovating castles from the middle ages in Southern France. She always dreamed of working with ‘Doctors without borders’ somewhere out in Africa, but ended up doing an ‘ordinary job’ in one of the smaller European countries.
