Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Publisher: Wednesday Books
Pub Date: April 24, 2018

Seventeen-year-old Eelyn’s world is war. Raised to fight alongside her Aska clansmen in a generations-old blood feud against the Riki, her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki if she wants to make it back to the fjord after the thaw. But when she begins to see herself in the people she’s been taught to hate, the world Eelyn once knew begins to crumble. And after the village is raided by a ruthless clan many believe to be a myth, Eelyn is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend who has tried more than once to kill her. Together, they must end the blood feud between their clans or watch their people be slaughtered.

A lush, Viking-age inspired fantasy about loyalty, forgiveness, and the definition of family.

Author Interview

  1.       Describe your book in 5 words

Brutal, bloody, intense, heartbreaking, challenging

  1.       What’s something interesting that you learned through your research for the book?

I found the Nordic myths and religion fascinating. The relationship between the people and their gods was really unique and there was an open mindedness among them that I love.

  1.       Do you have a favorite character that you’ve written?

Eelyn is my favorite because in so many ways, she’s a reflection of me. I feel a deep fondness for her.

  1.       What books have influenced you as a writer?

Stories that dissect humanity have been hugely influential on my approach to characters, like The Glass Castle and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. As far as imagination and world building and writing craft, I have been really influenced by Laini Taylor.

  1.       What are you currently reading?

Restore Me by Tehereh Mafi

  1.       What is the most important thing you want readers to take away from your book?

Sky in the Deep deals with a lot of questions about what we’ve always believed to be true vs what we come to know is true. I can only hope that anyone that reads this book has a moment to think about their own worldview and whether it lines up with the way they want to live.
