The Love Letters of Abelard and Lily

Read on for my interview with the author!

The Love Letters of Abelard and Lily
by Laura Creedle
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Mental Health, Romance
Release date: December 26, 2017

When Lily Michaels-Ryan ditches her ADHD meds and lands in detention with Abelard, who has Asperger’s, she’s intrigued—Abelard seems thirty seconds behind, while she feels thirty seconds ahead. It doesn’t hurt that he’s brilliant and beautiful.

When Abelard posts a quote from The Letters of Abelard and Heloise online, their mutual affinity for ancient love letters connects them. The two fall for each other. Hard. But is it enough to bridge their differences in person?

This hilarious, heartbreaking story of human connection between two neurodivergent teens creates characters that will stay with you long after you finish reading.

Author Interview

  1.  Describe your book in 5 words.

A nerdy, neuro-divergent love story

  1. What was it like writing from the POV of main characters who are not neurotypical?

I’m not neurotypical, so it was pretty easy, actually!  I did a lot of research when it came to Abelard’s character.  In some ways, I think I’d have a harder time writing neurotypical, although it’s been a huge surprise how many NT readers identified with Lily.  It’s lead me to believe that the laminar boundary between neurotypical and neurodivergent is not as large as I once thought— which is a pleasant thought indeed!

  1. Did you picture anyone in particular when writing your main characters?

Because Abelard’s picture is so important to the story, and The Letters of Abelard and Heloise are from the 13th century, I spent a lot of time looking at medieval paintings. I settled on a painting of young Phillipe de Croy by Rogier van der Weyden, as a model for Abelard (minus the unfortunate medieval bowl cut.)

4.What did you learn from researching for your book?

What didn’t I learn?   A lot about Autism and even stuff about ADHD I didn’t know.  Also,  medieval painting, the history of love letters,  and most awesomely, about medieval composer and all around polymath named Hildegarde von Bingen.

  1.  What was your time frame for writing this book?

I spent three years working on it, but it was pretty much done at the end of two years.  Publishing takes a long time.

  1. What books have influenced you as a writer?

Jane Eyre was probably the book that had the most influence on me.  I read it in fifth grade, and I reread it again recently, and I was struck by how impulsive and angry and above all, questioning of everything Jane was.  I know there are problems with the book, but this resonated with me then, and it still does now.

  1. What are you currently reading?

A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue,  Night Film

  1. When did you first want to be a writer and what did your journey to professional writing look like?

I always wrote.  I was pretty serious about being a writer in my early twenties, and a mentor tried to help me get a book in publishable shape, but I couldn’t do it.   Writing came easily but it took me decades to master revision.    About five years ago, I joined an online critique exchange group called Scribophile, and that really set me on the path to being able to revise and edit a novel.

  1. What is something about you that people would be surprised to know?

In the 90s, I played lead guitar in the band of a Cher female impersonator. How’s that for random?

Thank you for your interview!
