Top Ten Tuesday: TV Shows You Should Be Watching

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is an original weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week’s theme is all about TV shows. I love books but I really like when we change it up with some non-bookish topics for TTT! This week I’m sharing some shows I love that don’t get nearly enough appreciation.

1. Superstore

What it’s about:

Think The Office but everyone works at Walmart Cloud 9. I discovered it recently and binged the entire first season.

Why you should watch it:

  • diverse cast!
  • produced by one of the guys who did The Office
  • takes place in the same universe as The Mindy Project
  • America Ferrera stars and she’s also one of the producers

Season 2 starts on September 22 on NBC.

Why you should watch it:

  • IT’S SO FUNNY
  • almost entirely POC cast
  • Tracee Ellis Ross!!!!
  • Strong female characters
  • Smart writing
  • Every single character is great
  • Watch this

3. Lucifer

What it’s about:

“The series focuses on Lucifer Morningstar, who is bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell and resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the beauty of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals.” [source]

Why you should watch it:

  • Features characters created by Neil Gaiman & DC Comics
  • It’s one of the funniest shows I’ve seen in a long time
  • Badass female detective MC
  • Lucifer is a sarcastic asshole
  • No one believes Lucifer is really the devil but they all humor him so it’s a running joke
  • Conservatives tried to keep the show off the air because it makes Lucifer out to be a likeable guy
  • Watch this

Season 2 starts September 19 on FOX.

The Night Shift

4. The Night Shift

What it’s about:

It follows the lives of the overnight shift in the emergency room at San Antonio Memorial Hospital. Three of the surgeons have connections to the military. The show covers the PTSD that followed the characters time as army medics. One of the characters is still active in the army reserves and trying to hide his sexuality.

Why you should watch it:

  • Discussions of mental health and PTSD
  • Gay soldiers
  • Found families!!!!
  • They all really care about and support each other.
  • tbh I only started watching it because Brendan Fehr is in it so there’s that

Season 3 just finished airing on August 31 on NBC.

5. Life in Pieces

What it’s about:

The series chronicles the lives of three generations of the Short family as they go about their daily lives in St. Louis as told from the point of view of each character based on their own version of events. Each episode is told as four short stories, one for each branch of the Short family, with some connections related to the characters’ events. [source]

What you should watch it:

  • Usually with huge ensemble casts like this there’s at least one storyline that I don’t care about but I genuinely like all of the POVs.
  • The women are all really funny and don’t take any crap from their husbands
  • It’s not without it’s issues but it’s a show my mom and I can watch together and both laugh at all the same jokes
  • Colin Hanks (I think maybe I just like shows with the ex-Roswell cast??)
  • One of my favorite scenes

Season 2 starts October 27 on CBS.

goldbergs

6. The Goldbergs

What it’s about:

The Goldbergs is set in the 80s and loosely based around the showrunner’s own childhood.  It’s narrated by present-day Adam (the youngest son), who follows his family around documenting their life with his video camera.

Why you should watch it:

  • If you grew up in the 80s you’ll love all the pop culture references, music, and fashion
  • The characters are all completely ridiculous. The IMDB descriptions explain them better than I ever could
  • screen-shot-2016-09-06-at-8-40-22-pm
  • Lots of random guest stars: Nick Swardson, Chuck Norris, Weird Al, David Spade, Martin Starr, Charlie Sheen, and more

Season 4 starts on September 21 on ABC.

Why you should watch it:

  • The premise should be enough to draw you in??
  • Interesting mystery
  • Diverse cast, even though the two MCs are white
  • The crimes they solve each episode are all related to the MC’s mysterious tattoos, which they have to solve to uncover Jane Doe’s past and the purpose of the tattoos
  • Chrissy from Growing Pains is in it

Season 2 starts on September 14 on NBC.

8. Orphan Black

What it’s about:

Clones! The series raises issues about the moral and ethical implications of human cloning, and its effect on issues of personal identity.

Why you should watch it:

  • Clones clones clones
  • Tatiana Maslany plays every single MC. Watch a couple episodes and you’ll almost forget all the characters are the same actress because they’re all so different from each other
  • Found families
  • LGBTQIA+ rep
  • There’s a religious cult
  • Explores a lot into nature vs. nurture
