Friday Reads: February 26

Parent Teacher Conferences were this week and I’ve been so busy that I haven’t read much of anything.  The students have today off and I’m finally starting to feel like I’ve caught up on all my paperwork, so hopefully I can get some great reading in this weekend.

Here are the books I’m planning to read…

I’ve been wanting to read this one for awhile, and I’ve been in the mood for some contemporary lately so this is the perfect time to finally start it.

Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

I admit that I’m still not finished with my ADSOM re-read. My pre-order for A Gathering of Shadows shipped out a couple days ago, so I need to finish this up so I can dive right into AGOS when it arrives.

A Darker Shade final for IreneA Darker Shade of Magic (A Darker Shade of Magic #1) by V.E. Schwab

Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London—but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her ‘proper adventure’.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive—trickier than they hoped.

  1. I want to read these two so badly! I’ve only heard FANTASTIC things about them, I hope you enjoy them 🙂 (Definitely tell me what you think of them! I might give them a shot soon as well!)

I plan on reading (and hopeful finishing?) the Bronze Horseman by Paulina Simons – I’ve been meaning to continue reading it but I’ve been so busy lately so fingers crossed I get the time! If I have time I want to start reading Panic by Lauren Oliver, that seems pretty cool 🙂

    Wishing you luck ❤

  3. I have been meaning to read both of these books too. I have A Darker Shade of Magic, but it’s an audiobook and I don’t like just listening to books without the option to read along (i’m weird, i know). I have heard great things about Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda. The cover and title for that book are so unique.
I hope you find time this weekend and enjoy them both!

  4. Both of these are on my list to read. Sadly, A Darker Shade of Magic got pushed back because I need to read Glass Sword before it’s due back to the library lol. So, that’s what I’ll be reading this weekend. If that’s finished, I’ll get back into Passenger.
